We need society and we need solitude also; as we need summer and winter; day and night; exercise and rest. – Philip Gilbert Hamerton
That’s a nice quote! We always need both the facet; without one the other is incomplete. We need to have a proper balance of everything. They are the two sides of the same coin. Even the Hindu mythology puts up this fact beautifully. When the great ocean has been churned to get Amrit, the drink of immortality; they also receive Halahala, the deadliest poison. So, life and death both comes from the same place and from the same process. One can’t exist without other.
A little bit of intolerance in us too
Now coming to the present day, there is a lot of talk going on about the intolerance society and how we should get rid of this intolerance. But don’t you think, we need both? If you tolerate everything then you are going to be doomed. Even the master of non-violence clearly states that; one who commit injustice and the one who tolerate injustice without protest are equally guilty. So, we need a little bit of intolerance in us too.
Oh Philip, who are you?
An author, a painter or a critic?
Are you a poet or just a person with an Intellectual Life?
You asked to read without judgment;
For you opinions are growing and changing;
Are you a master orator or just a person with an Intellectual Life?
You compare culture with wealth;
You believe perfect life is a ship of war;
Are you a spiritual guide or just a person with an Intellectual Life?
